June 12 2019, Bruce Lee's Take on Taking Action

Joshes and Joshettes, you may have noticed the sudden influx of content. I am trying to become more consistent with my content and I am trying to stick to a schedule. What’s the schedule, no idea yet but for now it basically reads put out something for each day on the calendar. So from now on Wednesdays are meant for philosophy. The best part about my philosophy post is there will be a video attached to the end of the post. The video is recorded before writing the post so you can choose to read or watch the video (the post has more info). So let’s dive in with the first Philosophy Wednesday post.

For the first official Wednesday post, I decided to go with a lesson from my favorite philosopher, Bruce Lee. Today’s teaching is perfect for those of you who aren’t able to achieve your goals. So what is today’s teaching? If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done. Make at least one definite move daily toward your goal. It’s a long teaching but a powerful one. Once you master this teaching you will be able to achieve almost any goal. Let’s break down the first part of the teaching, if you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done. This part of the teaching translates to if you focus on something too hard it will never happen. Before I give an example I want to go over the second part, make at least one definite move daily toward your goal. The key word here is definite, you must perform an activity that will help you achieve your goal. A result producing activity. There’s a difference between watching YouTube to learn a skill and watching funny pranks on YouTube. Let me start a new paragraph just to give you some examples.

The best example of this quote is Josh from ten years ago. Ten years ago I went on vacation to Hawaii and I decided to pick up a custom hat at Lids. I told the worker to stitch in the title of the book I was writing, Private Eye. If you’ve read the book, then you would know this book came out in 2017 and not when I purchased the hat in 2009. Why didn’t I finish the book earlier? Because I was only focused on the idea of writing a book rather than working on it daily. That changed when in December 2016 when I worked on the book every-day and was able to finish the first draft before the new year. This teaching is so powerful that Stephen King talks about it in his book On Writing. In the book, he says that anyone who wants to be an author needs to write a minimum of a thousand words per day. He says that you can take one day off the week but he personally doesn’t (he also writes a minimum of two thousand words a day). I am currently working on a follow-up book to Private Eye and I have been more productive these past two weeks than I have been in the year and a half that I have been working on it. Let me put this into perspective, it took me a whole year to write four chapters 7,920 words. In my past four writing sessions, I have written 5,786 words. By doing a definite move and sitting down and hitting the minimum word requirements, I have typed 73% of what I typed in the year 2018.

I went over most of that previous paragraph in the video so let’s go over a new example. What if you are like Josh in 2019 and want to build your audience. You could lay in bed and complain about how you want a big audience and no one is viewing your content (not pointing any fingers at a certain writer). Or you can make an effort and work towards it every day by doing a result producing activity. Instead of producing content spastically, you could stick to a schedule. By sticking to a schedule your fans know exactly when to check for content. Another step you can take is to produce more than one piece of content a week, it only takes one to two hours to write a blog post. The more content you produce the more views you will receive (the classic saying if you build it they will come). Another step you can take is to up the quality of your content, no one wants to watch a video with bad audio. Make an effort and invest in some equipment, apps and stop shooting in random locations. The final step you can take is to leverage the power of social media instead of making excuses and never using it. If you don’t like the traditional platforms used the ones made for writers like Writing.com or Allpoetry.com. I don’t know if you realized what this paragraph was, it was me ranting at what I didn’t do and outlining the steps I have started taking daily. How can I talk about this teaching if I’m not applying it to my life and my business.

You can try to argue until your face is blue, but at the end of the day if you don’t put in result producing activities your goal is only a dream. Write your goal down and be sure to break it down into smaller parts. Then choose one of the smaller parts and attack it daily. Once the momentum picks up it becomes a snowball and you’ll end up crushing your goals. So stop reading this and go work on achieving your goals.

Remember to be successful it's your right, duty, and responsibility.
