December 7th 2019, Two Sites Two Approaches
Joshes and Joshettes, I haven’t written a post on this site in a while. In that time away, I launched a second site and that site gave me an idea on what to write on this site. In other words, today’s post is about what I learned from starting a second site.
The new site is a tech site, where I review anything tech which includes apps, cellphones, laptops and much more. Why did I decide to start a tech site? It combines my two loves, writing and technology so it’s a win-win. Even though I’m using the same web hosting site I use for this site, my approach is completely different. The main reason why I’m taking a different approach is because of a lack of funding. What does lack of funding have to do with running a website, it basically means I have no budget for advertising or custom designs. I was able to create logos and banners using free online sites, they aren’t custom but they work. The lack of advertisement is the biggest hurdle I have to overcome. In the past, I ran Facebook Ads to boost my audience and to gain more followers on my Facebook Page. What I could do is advertise my new site on this site and also on the Facebook Page which would allow me to use my existing audience to build traffic for my new site. This is a tough choice or me because I may choose to run Ads on the site. I run this site like a personal author’s blog, where I write about anything and I treat it as a way to get my creative juices flowing. Whereas I want this new site to have the ability to generate an income.
I don’t need to justify why I want to turn a profit using this new site but I will. Technology costs money and if I’m not sent sample units, I need to find a way to get my hands on them. The profits of that site will also allow me to cover my expenses for both sites such as hosting fees, domain fees, email costs and many other back-office costs. Trying to generate a profit allows me to not treat this new site as a hobby but an actual business as I do with my novels. I learned long ago that when there is money involved you treat things serious (learned this from fantasy football)and that’s what I plan to do. My goal for this new site is to have other creators assist me with producing content on the site. I have collaborated in the past with others and things did not work well. So I need to figure out a system for that (do a crapload of research).
The real question that now needs to be asked is what about this site? Am I going to abandon it because it doesn’t generate any income? Nope, I can’t because I need this site. This site allows me to give advice and help people which is worth more to me than money. I know my postings on here have been few and far between and there’s a reason for that is a topic for a future post. This site allows me to interact on a deeper level with my readers and basically dance like no one is watching. As this year is coming to a close, I find myself working harder than I have all year. I don’t know if it’s because I’m turning thirty or because I’m returning to the working force in a month. The one thing I do know is that for my plans to work, I need to work hard and produce more content then I have ever produced.
