May 28th 2018 What I Learned From A Post-it Notes
Yup this title is one hundred percent true, I'm writing about Post-it Notes. One of the most important lessons in life was taught to me by a Post-it Note. So Joe's and Joette's get ready to learn from a Post-it Note.
A couple of years ago when I was an Assistant Manager, my District Manager sat both my manager and I down. He wanted to talk to us about our productivity. We were barely hitting our sales goals which I will refer to as our numbers. We thought it would be a normal scolding, but it turned out to be a powerful life lesson. Instead of sitting us down he grabbed a stack of Post-it Notes and advised us to follow him. He took us to an empty wall and gave us one Post-it Note each. We were told to put the Post-it Note as high up on the wall as we could without jumping. After we stuck them to the wall, he asked if we could stick them higher. We both said that was the highest we could stick them, he told us he didn't believe us and he could prove it. He pulled out a five dollar bill and said we could have it if we were able to place a new Post-it Note higher than the last. Guess what, we were both able to place the new Post-it Notes higher than the previous ones. The District Manager then said this "Never forget what I just taught you."
Some readers might be scratching their heads right now and that's okay. I didn't realize the power of that lesson until years later. One of the reasons why I didn't realize the power of this teaching back then, was due to the fact he taught us two lessons that day. The first lesson was this..... You think you are doing everything possible but in reality you aren't. This is shown by us being able to place the second Post-it Note higher than the first. Even though we got on our tip toes and stretched our arms as much as we could, we were able to get the second one higher. This is where the second lesson comes in.... If you want something bad enough you will get it. We wanted the five dollars so we were motivated to do our best to succeed. Before you start thinking that we used a trick to stick the Post-it higher, we didn't. We did the same exact thing, we had more incentive to pass our previous marker.
Right now a light bulb just went off in your head. This lesson is something that you've heard me say before as well as other speakers. Your why AKA your true goal determines how much work you put in. True goal what is that? It's alright if you don't know what it means because this is another Books By Josh term. True goal is the one thing you desire above all else. It could be something as simple as sending your child to a good college or getting out of your parents' basement. We are willing to do almost anything to achieve our true goal. We didn't see value in actually giving our all in our job and it was reflected in our numbers. Our District Manager knew this and that's why he gave us this life lesson. By him showing us that we can do more even though we said we have it our all, he proved that we weren't hungry. Our true goal in our job was to get by doing the bare minimum.
Like always there are some people reading this post and saying that this lesson sounds good but that's it. They don't see any real value from the power of the Post-it Note teaching. It's perfectly fine to think this way because it took me a couple of years to realize the strength of the Post-it Note teaching. I want the people with that mindset to come back to this post in a year or two. Think back to when you first read this post. What dreams, goals or aspirations did you have? Were able to achieve them? Did you do everything in your power to achieve them? Did you change your approach like Sylvester Stallone (Youtube his dog story)? If not then take ownership and say that you didn't want it bad enough. Your why wasn't strong enough to push that second Post-it higher than the first.
So Josh from Books by Josh, what does this post have to do with you and your business? Yup, I just asked myself a question in my own post. My true goal is strong enough for me to take ownership. I know I'm not doing everything possible, which is why I started changing my approach. I started reading more books but at the same time I'm putting out more content. If you've read my post about my bank statement you would see how personal I am willing to go. I was going to put up one of my statements but that's goes against Google's and Apple's TOS (terms of service). Why would I care about their TOS, well I'm waiting for this site to get approved by them. Why, because we are going to be on Apple and Google News. You read that correctly, I am working on making our content more accessible. Heck, I even changed up my marketing strategy and I have seen some amazing results. Only time will tell how far we go with this approach; however, all this was made possible because of a Post-it Note. What I do know for sure is that next year on this day my Post-it Note will be higher than it is today.
