May 21st 2018, Got Hit by a Washing Machine

The title is not a click bait title, that actually happened to me last week Monday on the 14th. Don't worry I'm alright but I do have an open workers comp case. What can you learn from this, probably nothing but it still makes for a good story. So sit up and get ready to hear what I learned from this washing machine.

For those who have only read the blog and have not listened to the podcast or viewed our videos: I currently work as an Assistant Manager in a furniture store. I get injured in some way at least once per working day, heck I even got injured this past Saturday even though I'm on light duty. Since I have been doing this for over half a year my body has become accustomed to the job. It requires physical labor as a job requirement, so its not uncommon for me to go on deliveries. It was a simple delivery to deliver a washing machine into an apartment on the second floor. Sounds simple right, that's because it is. The only problem is me and my co worker messed up the delivery. We moved too fast and rushed the delivery and we all know they saying "Haste makes Waste."

We got half way up the flight of stairs and decided to go faster. Right when we did that the washer came off the hand truck and flew down the stairs toward me. I had no time to react and took the washing machine straight to the chest. I was unable to brace myself and took 140lbs to the chest and stumbled. I lost my footing and went down three steps, the only reason I did not fall all the way down the stairs is because of the small amount of time I have been putting in at the gym. Even though I can laugh when talking about the incident I still injured myself pretty bad by spraining my shoulder. Don't worry there is a lesson to learn here.

The main lesson here is; "Just because everything is going your way now doesn't mean it will always be that way." Simply put, bad things can happen out of the blue. There is no real way to be prepared for it but by having good foundations you can make it through with a couple of scars. This lesson applies to business also if you nail your foundations then you can weather the storm. Look at Walmart, Sam Walton lost half his management team in the span of a couple of months yet they survived. Why, because they stuck to the fundamentals and rebuilt the business stronger than it was.
