April 27th 2018 Advice to My Younger Self
Joe's and Joette's, you are in for a treat because I've decided to touch upon a hot topic. This topic is often asked to top business men and entrepreneurs, so why not give my own answer. I know I'm not big enough yet to get asked this question but let me provide the answer anyway. Why, because this answer could change your life. I'm currently eighteen years old and this advice is for eighteen year old Josh, the aspiring entrepreneur.
Before I get too deep into the post let me give you some context about eighteen year old me. I was a full-time college student, I had started a small side business repairing computers and I just started working for Circuit City repairing computers. My major in college was, you guessed it computer science. Yet somehow I ended up producing content and writing a book. With what I told you about eighteen year old me, this career decision seems to come out of nowhere. The only problem is I always wanted to be a writer, that is the biggest drawback of eighteen year old me. I wasn't being honest with myself, I went into an industry because it was where the money was. Which is why I dropped out of college after only attending for two years. I couldn't see myself working in a cubicle programming for the rest of my life. So let's get down to all the things I would have told younger me.
As I already stated the first piece of advice I would have told myself is to be true to myself. If you don't understand what that means it's alright because it's just a fancy way of saying follow your dreams or passions. By the time I was eighteen I was already a published poet with a passion for writing. I could have pursued that yet I didn't because I let everyone get into my head. I wasn't surrounding myself with the right people and everyone laughed at the idea of me becoming a writer. I don't blame them because my grades in English made it seem that I was a bad writer. I scored low because of one factor, I was lazy. This is the perfect segue to the next piece of advice to younger me.
Stop being lazy and do the work. This was a major reason why I never really attained anything in my youth. Let's take my score in English during my junior and senior year as a prime example. I managed to maintain a 50% average in English for two years. I wasn't bad in English I just never made an effort. When I had to give up my summers in order to attend summer school I made sure I did the work and received a 100% in all of my English classes. Don't get me wrong, even now at age twenty eight I still find it hard to push myself in order to complete a task. I still have a hard time waking up early to start my day, however I'm doing the work. No longer am I waiting until the last possible moment before completing a task. Guess what completing a task is a good segue for the final piece of advice.
The final piece of advice I would give my younger self is to finish what I start. When I was younger I never finished anything that I started. Hence why I never succeeded at keeping my repair business going. I started college and didn't finish. Heck I even started a course to teach English in Japan. Finishing my book was the first real thing I ever finished. If the younger version of me finished everything I started, I wouldn't be here writing this post. But guess what, things happen for a reason.
