February 12th 2018 What is a Teacher?
Today's post is not inspired by anything because it is one of my backup topics. Why am I using a back up topic? Didn't have time to think of a new topic and this topic is a universal topic. That basically means that it works in any form of creation, podcast video or blog post. So let's dive into today's blog post.
Today's post title makes it sound like I'm going to define the role of a teacher. Unfortunately, I'm not to give my definition of a teacher; however, I will tell you how the master defined it.... "A teacher is never a giver of truth; he is a guide, a pointer to the truth that each student must find for himself." This amazing quote was said by none other than the master himself, Bruce Lee. Just like the last big Bruce Lee quote I am going to take it apart and go over each part separately. Many readers might not know this but I was a teacher at one point of my life and man do I wish I knew this quote back then.
The first part of the quote is "A teacher is never a giver of truth," this doesn't mean that a teacher will lie and lead you down the wrong path. What this portion of the quote means is the teacher will not give you all of the answers. Back in my high school days, I always felt that my teachers were a bit harder on me than other students. This was especially true of my English teachers, one teacher kicked me out of class almost every day. I was a bit unruly so I was sent to the library with the task of reading a book and summarizing it for them. I had another teacher who straight out failed me for six marking periods straight. Another English teacher graded all of my work harsher than the other students. I didn't understand the reasons at the time but each of teachers wanted me to do my best. I went to summer school for two years straight because of the last two teachers which forced me to try in summer school. If I didn't pass then I wouldn't be able to graduate, so I tried and I was able to get 100 for each English class I took in summer school.
The second part of the quote "The teacher is a guide, a pointer to the truth that each student must find for himself." As with my English teachers, they knew I could do good if I actually applied myself. But I believe this portion of the quote is better showcased in the world of business. Not everyone in the world of business is amazing right out of the gate, that's why most get mentors. You don't have to meet these mentors because Jeff Bezos sites Sam Walton as one of his mentors, yet Walton has passed from this world. Even though Sam Walton is no longer around he still points the students to the truth. How you may ask, through his book Made in America. In his new book Crushing It, Gary Vaynerchuck has included the success stories of everyday people into his book. People are constantly thanking him for their success but he does not tell them how to succeed in their lives or in business. All he does is give advice to millions of people every day. He doesn't make an action plan for everyone nor does he plan everyone's day for them. He gives advise from life experiences and the students use that knowledge to influence their decisions.
I see Bruce Lee as my teacher which is why I am always using his teaching to teach you, the audience. This quote in my honest opinion is a better way of saying "You can take a horse to the water but you can't make it drink." Just do yourself a favor and think back to all the real teacher you had in life and just try to understand what they were trying to teach you. Basically read in between the lines.
