January 4th 2018 Identify Yourself

Today's post is inspired by two different post ideas that I was thinking about covering. So what's better than combining both of them into one post overflowing with content. Like always my title doesn't fully prepare you the post, so let me stop teasing and dive in to today's post.

Let me get this out of the way, I am not going to ask you to look in the mirror and recite a couple of affirmations. What I will task you with is this.. Write down your strengths and weaknesses on a piece of paper. List a minimum of five strengths and five weaknesses. I really want you to do this so stop reading at this point until you have written out your strengths and weaknesses. Now that your back I want you to look at the list and then put it away. Why would I make you go through all that to just to have you put it away. Because those are not your real weaknesses and strengths. You see yourself in rose colored glasses so you need someone else to identify your strengths and weaknesses. I want you to get your real strengths and weaknesses from those who are close to you. After you get the list from those around you compare it to your own list. This will give you an insight on how other see you and now how does your list compare to theirs?

Okay, Josh I see that you want me to learn my own weaknesses and strengths now what? My friends and family see me as blah blah blah, what's the point? We all know the saying that you are only as strong as your weakest link; however what if your weakest link is one of your strengths. Yes that is an oxymoron, but it is possible. We all need to work on our biggest weakness and turn that into a strength. But Josh what is my biggest weakness there so many listed here. There's two things I want you to take notice of in all of the lists. Look at the weakness that pops up the most throughout the lists and also take notice at the first weakness on each list. It is important to take notice of the first weakness listed because it is the first thing that came to mind in regards to you. There's a specific reason why they think of this when asked to name your weakness. I don't know the reason because I am not you. You have to look deep within yourself and answer that question, just don't look into the mirror right now. (I promised that I wouldn't make you do that).

Where am I going now with this? You've found your one or two true weaknesses now what? Do the same with your strengths. I could tell you to work on those weaknesses until they take the place of those strengths, that would be easy but I won't. I want you to use your strengths to work on your weaknesses. This might not apply to some of you reading this but I have something else to help with this. One of my weaknesses in the past was sales, I didn't like selling. One of my biggest strengths is my personality because I am a very technical person. I like going above and learning all products that we sell. When I sell electronics I know the product inside and out because I like to learn the features. I used this product knowledge to give recommendations to customers to increase my sales. I listened to what they needed and recommended the best product suited for them. The average commission at the company I was working for at the time was about thirty to forty dollars a day. By using one of my greatest strengths I was able to turn my weakness into a strength. Without knowing I became a master of suggestive selling and I was able to average over eighty dollars a day in commissions. In the final two days with the company I was able to peak and reach one hundred and twenty five dollars a day. Yes within two days I made two hundred and fifty dollars in commission before tax.

Josh that's great for you but my strengths don't allow me to do that for my weaknesses. I want to say that I acknowledge that but that's not the whole truth. You just haven't found a way to make it work yet, so I have an exercise for you. Take on a small project that has to do with your weakness, and see it through. If you weakness is that you are shy and you have problems building a connection with your coworkers; yet one of your strengths is cooking you are set. If you haven't put two and two together  don't worry I'll tell you the answer. You can start bringing in your lunches to work but change it up every day. People will notice and ask you what restaurant cooked that, how come you always have something good to eat every day or even did you make that. It will spark a conversation. Or you can go full throttle and just bake something for the office. If you suck act public speaking but love studying and learning then tutor. Don't tutor regularly do a cheap or free group tutoring session. Start small with two or three people who you know. This way you will not feel that intimidated.

Don't work on more than one weakness at a time, focus on one and stay true to it.  Remember the man who chases two rabbits catches none. Take your time, there's no telling how long it will take to for you to turn your weakness into a strength. For me it took a couple of years, so just give it time. Now that you have turned your biggest weaknesses into strengths do you take more weaknesses from those lists and work on them... No! You are no longer that person, I want you to repeat the same activity with a twist. I want you to use the same exact people but also add two more who you have met recently. This will allow you to see if you have grown in the eyes of your inner circle. But by asking new people something special is about to happen. If you followed this post to a T then the new people will lists your old big weaknesses as strengths. If you are reading this after following through you are now calling me a psychic because I was right. How do I know this works, because I did it and it worked for me. Some of my old co workers will call me an amazing sales person but I don't see it.
